Where the Mind is Without Fear and the Head is Held High

These powerful words by Rabindranath Tagore provide anyone with a boost of energy and motivation. His words continue to inspire thousands to this day. One of the reasons all great writers have a lasting impression is that their works leave an imprint on our minds. Our minds work in mysterious ways, and, fundamentally, we should keep them in a complete functioning condition.

When our brain does not function properly, we suffer from various types of ailments and disorders that affect our thinking, functioning, and day-to-day activities. It is then when we need external help or assistance from experts who deal with these problems. Mental Disorder Treatment for men has been pushed to the side-lines, and the entire issue has somehow skipped the mainstream health issues. Notice how our minds automatically go to thoughts about our physical health and not our mental health when we say health issues. It must be emphasised that our minds are a part of our body and necessary to cater to our well-being.

These are small steps we can take to ensure that the overall well-being of an individual or the society, in general, is not marginalised or side-lined. More emphasis should be given to mental health, and for reasons much more important, it is necessary and has been ignored for a long time.

So many men are suffering from these issues and are stigmatised and cornered to speak up or discuss their mental well-being. It has to be understood that talking and discussing mental health, mental disorder, and treatment is not a sign of being weak; it is a much-needed part of self-love, which we all do very little of.

Mental Disorder Treatment

Feeling Sad but Don’t Know Why

Our fast-paced lives do not provide us with the luxury of taking time out for ourselves to sit and contemplate for a moment about where we are in our lives. We do not mean the next meeting you have to attend or the friend's house you need to go to; we mean how you are holding up mentally. We undergo several moments of stress and tiny triggers every day. We overlook and do not bother to pay heed to them. We don't realise that these moments affect our cognitive capacities and manifest as stressors in our bodies. You may not learn it right away, but you are bound to think about it five years down the line when you look up search results for ‘ treatment for mental health disorders’ while you deal with unresolved stress.

Take some time out for yourself. It might sound naïve, but there is no point in glorifying getting overworked. Ask yourself, why are you working? For the salary, because you love the job because it makes your life better? Think for a second; imagine all the perks of your job – the salary, bonuses and everything else. How will you use all of those if you cannot enjoy them? Or not in a position where you can effectively live in that moment, be it by yourself or with family or loved ones. What is the point of working so hard at a company that will take less than a week to replace you if anything happens to you, god forbid?

This should not be considered an indication or instruction not to work at all or work any less effectively. We only want to point out that taking breaks is very necessary to have a balanced life. Work stress is one of the main reasons for depression, especially in men. It is time we address that and find effective early treatments of mental disorders to deal with it.

Symptoms of Depression

Each person has their reasons, stressors and triggers that lead to these manifestations. With a significant mood disorder and prolonged sadness, depression makes a person lose interest in their daily activities, work and other aspects of their lives. It is not a moment of weakness or thought from which you can snap out of. There are medications and therapies available to treat mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder etc.

Undergoing depression treatment does not guarantee any instant cure. But it helps the person to get help and support and feel better about them gradually. It might be better with long term treatment, so do not discontinue or get discouraged if you don’t see the results right away. Seeking help is always an option, and one should always do so, especially when they are feeling down or realising that it is out of their control.

There are several symptoms of depression. There may be minor episodes of these symptoms or happen every day, depending on the person and their conditions.

Some of the symptoms of depression may include –

  • Having trouble sleeping or sleeping too much.
  • Anxiety, restlessness and difficulty in concentrating
  • Feeling tired all the time, even the smallest of the tasks takes extra effort.
  • Reduced appetite, loss of weight or weight gain and increased cravings for food.
  • Bursts of rage, fit and anger even for small matters.
  • Slower thinking, speaking and body movements.
  • Lowered self-esteem, loss of self-worth and feeling of guilt.
  • Loss of interest in everyday activities, sports and hobbies.
  • Lower sex drives, loss of libido or disinterest in sex.
  • The trouble with decision-taking and remembering things.
  • Developing behavioural disorders or addiction to substances.
  • Body pains, headaches, neck and shoulder pain, backaches.
  • Frequent suicidal thoughts, thoughts about death and attempts at suicide.

Depression and Rehabilitation

Having a mental illness is challenging. Not only is it tough for that person, but it is also difficult for their family and close ones. Sadly, there is no permanent cure, only recovery and treatment for mental disorders. However, there are several ways through which depression can be tackled. One of those ways is through counselling. Having a therapist talk to you about your problems is the primary step towards opening up and exploring your options for treatment. Another intense way to tackle depression is to go to rehab for it. Does it help? Yes, but depending on the type of therapy you are undergoing. Some standard methods are used in rehabilitation centres in Delhi to treat depression and anxiety. These are –

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • Interpersonal Therapy
  • Psychodynamic Therapy
  • Prescribing Antidepressants
  • Alternative Therapies

Often, a blend of these techniques and medications are used for better results. When it comes to mental health, one thing that needs to be kept in mind is that one size does not fit all. A therapy that works for others does not necessarily mean it will benefit you. That does not imply that the therapy is useless; it is just less effective for you.
